Title: Union Pacific's Turbine Era
Seller ID: WP138
Although the production gas-turbine-electric era lasted just over two decades on the Union Pacific Railroad, this western carrier's experience with turbine-driven locomotives dates to 1939, when it tested a pair of steam-powered turbines. These locomotives were less than successful but the UP continued its interest in turbines. After WWII GE and Alco teamed up to produce the first gas-turbine-electric locomotive in America, the double-cab equipped 101, in a B+B-B+B truck configuration. The development of the turbines eventually led to the construction of the massive 8,500 hp turbines delivered in 1958. The purpose of this book is to pictorially cover the fleet over the entirety of their service lives, illustrating the changes to each unit. Each locomotive is shown in multiple views, allowing the reader to view the units from when they were first delivered to near retirement. Many of the photographs presented are previously unpublished. Includes a 14 page color section. Retail $55.00.
