Rails Around South Jersey Vol. 1: The Steam and Electric Era. Photographs from the Granville Thomas and Alfred Undy collections housed in the archives of the Outer Station Project. In the early 20th century, Atlantic City and the Southern New Jersey seashore were major seaside vacation destinations for the Delaware Valley-Philadelphia area wealthy and working classes alike. The popularity of South Jersey's seashore was made possible by rail transportation which provided fast and inexpensive service. Two companies, subsidiaries of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Philadelphia & Reading, competed with parallel tracks for this business. With the emergence of highways with auto and bus competition and decline in railroad revenues the New Jersey government ordered the railroad companies to merge and the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines was formed. This book with large-format b&w photographs, presents the P-RSL trains, equipment and stations during the steam era. Contents: Outer Station Project, laminated hard cover, 80 pages, 11 x 8.5 x .5 in., b&w photographs.
